Your Guide to the Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure which removes excess fat and skin in the abdominal region. It also improves muscle tone creating a smoother, more toned abdomen.

The procedure spans from 2 to 5 hours depending on the technique.  A partial tummy tuck takes only 1 to 2 hours.

A mini or partial tummy tuck is less invasive than a full blown tummy tuck. The procedure is recommended for patients who are within 10% of their ideal body weight. A simple incision is made and the fat below the navel is removed, sometimes via liposuction. This results in a smoother and firmer lower abdominal area. A full tummy tuck involves two  incisions, the first of  which goes around the navel and second goes across the abdomen from hipbone to hipbone. The skin is separated from the fat which is then removed. The muscles are tightened by cutting and suturing. Scars and other marks are removed during the procedure. The incision around the navel is used to remove excess skin in the upper abdominal region. Drains are placed in the skin and are used to collect excess fluids. These are removed in a few days. The incisions are closed using sutures, skin adhesives or clips. The end result is a flatter, smoother profile. The abdomen will no longer protrude. It may take a while for the complete results to be noticeable as there is considerable swelling after the procedure is performed.

Bruising, pain, soreness and numbing of the area are common side effects. They tend to last for several weeks or months. Recovery usually takes around 2-4 weeks; however, the fading of scars may take anywhere from a few months to 2 years.

Risks include blood clots, scarring, and infection. Some cases require follow up surgery. The results last for years, provided the patient keep up with a regular exercise regimen and a healthy diet.

The average cost range of a tummy tuck is in between $5,000-$9,000.
