The Restorative Power of Veneers
Teeth are an important part of a beautiful smile as well as a happy life. All too often people take their teeth for granted until something goes wrong, only then do they dedicate some thought and care to their teeth. Sometimes people let their teeth deteriorate to a point where something serious has to be done in order to restore their wellbeing. Often times this is when dentist’s will step in with veneers. If the surface of a person’s teeth have been damaged or they wish to give themselves a more attractive smile, veneers can be the solution to their problems.
A veneer is a thin material that is put over a person’s existing tooth in order to give their teeth a uniform, beautiful appearance and offer an extra layer of protection if the surface of the tooth is damaged. Veneers are typically constructed out of either porcelain or composite. Composite veneers tend to be more popular because they can be placed directly into the mouth or indirectly by being bonded to the tooth with a type of cement. Porcelain veneers can only be indirectly placed in the mouth and they have a higher chance of chipping than composite veneers.
Today’s dental technology means that getting veneers has become a much less invasive and painful process than what it once was. In order to have veneers put into place, the existing teeth must be filed down about half a millimeter in order for the veneers to fit well in the mouth and have a natural look to them. If the teeth are not reduced then the veneers can cause the person’s lips to protrude when their mouth is closed, which is not typically the look most people go for. The advancement in technology and the options that people have today make veneers an increasingly appealing choice for individuals who want to seriously improve the quality of their smile.
