A Man’s Guide to Hair Care

Men are notoriously nonchalant about the way that they treat their hair, wanting to avoid looking vain or superficial in front of their family and especially in front of their brawny, macho peers.  Nonetheless, the moment will (or may, unless you avoid it) arrive for any man when their years of neglect will begin to take their toll, leading to premature hair loss or to a general decline in hair health (of what’s left, that is!).  Though hair care sounds like a term solely intended for the ears of women, the reality is that men are increasingly heeding the call of diligent hair care and helping insure their crop-up-top for as long as can be.

There are a few factors that men need to be made aware of in terms of caring for one’s hair.  First of all, there is the fact that hereditary hair loss is not something that can be prevented—it can only be treated with ad hoc measures like hair transplants.  But that’s only pertinent to people that have inherited the condition; for the rest of men, and for those whose hereditary condition has yet to set it, there are many key issues to contemplate.

For starters, there is the fact that your scalp (yes, the skin on your head) is practically solely responsible for the fate of your follicles: treat your scalp with love and respect, and your hair will flourish as a result; neglect it, and kiss your mop goodbye.  Constant and extended scalp massages are one of the surest ways to keep your hair follicles shipshape (in fact, the mere act of massaging the head is the real secret behind many “hair loss prevention” gimmicks).

Next up on the list of pertinent details is the fact that your diet will influence your hair’s health.  Resilient hair depends on an adequate supply of iron and proteins, which you need to consume in your diet—hence, imagine that every time you eat a steak or a plate of beans, you are doing your hair a huge favor!  Finally, remember not to abuse your hair: letting it grow too long and using constrictive hats, etc., will weaken your hair beyond repair with time.
